Search Engines
Search Engines are our eyes into the World Wide Web. When we need some information on a certain subject or looking for products to buy, we use the search engines to search out the sites relevant to what we’re looking for. Search Engines take what we request in the search box, and scan different pages and documents found on the websites throughout the internet. Then they pull up the results of the ones closest to what we’re looking for. We can then browse through those results and choose the ones we want to check out. This internet scanning that the search engines do, acts as an aid for website owners who want to drive traffic to their site. This is called search engine optimization. The websites offer articles and ads on their site, with words relating to their site’s subject that would increase their chances of the internet search engines picking up their site in a person’s search results. This would also increase their chance that you will choose their site to visit and browse. There are several Search Engines to choose from. Finding the best search engine for you depends on what your preferences are and what you’re looking for. Google, a free search engine, is found on all web browsers. The Google search engine is the most popular one people use for their searches. All search engines are good to use, it only depends on what your needs are. In some cases, you might use a Meta search engine as it sends the search to all search engines and gives you the results from all of them. Your web browser should have a search engine list for you to select the one of your choice when making a search of a subject. Some are specific to a topic, like Amazon. It allows you to search their site for a particular book or item you want to buy. There’s also WebMD that enables you to search for medical related subjects. They eliminate the other sites that aren’t specific to what you’re looking for. If you were looking for diabetes information, you won’t have results showing an unrelated website that merely mentions the word diabetes instead of talking about it. You may have noticed that some sites offer Search Engines that search their websites for your specific need. A video search engine would one example of that. You could search for a certain video in the search box, without having to browse through all the links within the site to find it. Some of those sites have millions to choose from so the Search Engine would be a life saver. |
